When we are in the midst of a calamity, it always seems insurmountable and incapacitating. “How can I ever get over this?”, we keep asking ourselves. But almost all of the time, we do get over it, get through it, and get past it. Then we often forget about it, moving on to worry about new challenges, rarely looking back and appreciating the fact that by the mercy and grace of Allah we survived what seemed impossible back then.

If we change our perspective but a little, if we learn to, at the darkest and lowest moments in life, instead of crying over this seemingly bottomless valley, recall the countless valleys that we have already conquered with the guidance and support of Allah, we will have much less anxiety, and much more hope. Despair will be replaced by gratitude, uncertainty by contentment, fear by courage, doubt by trust.

Therefore, take every calamity as a reminder of the bounty and blessing of Allah that he has already bestowed upon you numerous times in getting you through past calamities. Turn complaints about this current situation into glorification and appreciation for Allah for all the previous situations. Soon, in shaa Allah, you will find that this calamity is gone and over, too, just like all the others are.

So really, the question is not “how can I ever get over this?”, bur rather, “surely I’ll get over this in shaa Allah, but will I be grateful this time?”

By the way, all of these reflections are immaculately summarised in surat-Duha. In one of the toughest moments of the Prophet’s (phuh) life, Allah turned his attention to the favours that he has previously bestowed upon him, and thus assuring him that the upcoming will surely be better than the current, and instructing him to express gratitude, both in actions and in words.

May Allah help us through our calamities, as he always has, and make us ever more grateful all the while.
